You may have heard about different elements that play a major role in your SEO campaign. However, there are lots of diverse views and opinions about heading tags. Are these heading tags useful for an SEO campaign? Do they make any difference in your SEO effort? Google uses meta tags and some other page tags to rank websites. While managing digital marketing service, professionals also take care of those tags.

In a recent interview session, Google’s John Mueller has mentioned that H1 headings and other heading tags are vital for ranking your website. This affirmation from Mueller has persuaded digital marketers to take steps and focus more on those heading tags. By adding the best headings to your website, you can accomplish several tasks to promote the webpage. Thus, it is clear that Google relies on it as one of the ranking factors. Moreover, proper headings help in structuring your information. You can interconnect different parts and make the page easily navigable. Your website visitors can easily identify how they will move through your website to reach the right page.

Does the choice of your heading tag make any difference?

You can raise a question- Can I use the H2 tag in place of the H1 tag? Mueller has revealed that a web page having no H1 tag can rank for the chosen keywords included in H2. Thus, the choice of your heating element will not make any noticeable difference.

According to Mueller, heading tags are one of the ranking factors for your website. However, he also said that a website has a chance of ranking high without any heading tag. You may notice it by checking your competitors’ sites. It makes you feel that heading tags hold no importance in the SEO campaign. Then, why should you use these tags?

Muller has provided some more information and it will help you to understand the value of those tags.

The presence of headings on your webpage helps in a better and easier understanding of your content. A reader reads not only the content but also the headings. Thus, by using these tags properly, you can reveal the theme and subject of the content. You may also use heading tags for your image SEO.

Why should you use heading tags in your web content?

By adding heading tags, you can make your readers interested in the content. Your potential customers’ behavior and interactions can affect your SERP result. From SEO perspective, the duration of your visitors’ stay on the page is one of the SEO factors. Thus, you have to write your headings creatively to draw the readers’ attention.

Some researchers have found that most website visitors do not like to go through the overall content. However, they like to analyze the headings of your content. The web content without an appropriate structure may not be easily interpretable.

That is why you have to publish properly organized content with relevant headings. The use of headings makes every section semantic. Maintain the proper length of your headings and let readers read your content.

How should you use H1 heading–

It is already mentioned that John Mueller has not given high importance to the use of heading tags. However, some SEO specialists and webmasters think that without any H1 tag, they can find a negative effect on the SERP page. Thus, you must know the right use of this tag to get the optimal value from it. Let the crawler understand your web content by analyzing H1 tags.

How many times should you use H1 tags?

While some professionals like to use the tag once, Mueller confirms that you can use it any number of times. However, H1 helps in describing the overall content. Thus, some professionals claim that the use of multiple times can affect the structural integrity of the content.

No one knows how Google manages more than one H1 tag. It may result in the uniform distribution of the weight. Google may give more preference to the first heading. Use the heading tags in a way that makes the content easily understandable to the bot.

Should you use H2 and other heading tags?

It depends on your content length and complexity level. Short content does not need a highly complicated and detailed structuring. You cannot divide it with headers. You may use tags up to H4. However, there is no limit to the number of tags to be used.

What is not a Google search ranking factor?

When you are building your company’s website, you must incorporate proper Search Engine Optimization or SEO and management protocols to achieve higher rankings in the search engine landing pages. Search engines use web crawlers that run on algorithms to identify the appropriate website and display it on the Search Engine Result Pages or SERPs.

However, when you are incorporating SEO protocols, you mustn’t believe SEO myths, which can prove counterproductive. For example, one of the most common myths that most site owners believe is that the longer time prospective visitors spend on their websites, their websites will be on SERPs.

Although search engines have a method of evaluating the time spent on a website and the number of subsequent web pages visited, they do not have a direct bearing on the ranking.

Instead, the amount of web traffic that your website attracts and the organic traffic attracted by your company’s website has more bearing on the SERPs’ ranking received by the site. Thus, instead of making your visitors stay longer on your company’s website, you should build a website that attracts more web traffic. Some of the other SEO related myths that site owners often believe in are as follows:

  1. Mentioning social media ‘likes’ on the company website

You should promote your company’s website on social media platforms. Still, if you think that mentioning the number of ‘likes’ your company’s website has received on these platforms on the site itself with improving its ranking, then you are mistaken.

SEO management means creating content relevant to the products and services offered by your company. A significant part of this is keyword management without indulging in keyword cannibalization and overuse of keywords.

Hence, mentioning social media likes will not create any difference to the content or add to SEO management. It does not have any bearing on the ranking of your company’s website. Instead, adequate marketing on social media platforms and connecting it to your company’s website can have a bearing on the ranking of your company’s website.

It can attract more web traffic to the website and subsequently improve the ranking of the site. Thus, instead of mentioning the number of likes, you should use social media platforms to promote your company’s website to attract more organic web traffic.

  1. Click through rates or CTR.

The click-through rate or CTR is a measurement of ranking which is used by search engines. It is primarily used to identify how often clients click on a link to view a page provided in an email, advertisement, or message.

However, search engines are quick to identify if the CTR is being raised artificially or is organic. Most site owners believe that a higher CTR means that their websites will receive a higher ranking in the search engine landing pages.

Hence, they often try to raise the CTR artificially. This can prove to be counterproductive as if identified by the search engines as the CTR is not organic, it will be flagged off, and your company’s website will receive a lower ranking. Hence, the CTR should be raised in a manner that adhered to the protocols of digital marketing and

  1. User behavior

User behavior is challenging to predict. Search engines, especially Google, do not use user behavior to predict a website’s ranking on SERPs. The only factor that is taken into consideration is the subsequent web pages that the user visits.

However, this should not be confused with the time spent on a particular website. When a visitor goes on to a website, he is expected to visit subsequent web pages till he is satisfied and has found the product or service he is for or till his query is resolved. This is not an evaluation of user behavior, as this is the usual behavior of any visitor. Google does not have any tool to evaluate the behavior of a visitor.

It can run analytics to help the site owner predict the visitor’s purchases based on his previous purchases, but this does not affect the ranking of the website. Google analytics helps predict customer behavior concerning purchases but does not have anything to do with website rankings on SERPs. Google Analytics is often viewed as a marketing tool that makes it easier for customers to make purchases and helps them choose products based on their previous visits and purchases.

Thus, numerous SEO-related myths can confuse site owners, which can lead to unprofessional SEO management. Suppose you want your company’s website to receive a higher ranking in the SERPs. In that case, it is necessary to have excellent content on your company’s website and to ensure that you proper SEO protocols and management in place. This will help your company’s website achieve a higher ranking in the SERPs and not the SEO myths that many site owners follow.

To sum up, it can be said that the content readers (the end-users) are the major factors to adjust SEO elements, like heading tags. Google always declares that its algorithms are primarily to provide the best content to its users. Thus, you have to focus on internet users to deal with any SEO element.
