Original ways to activate students’ knowledge in biology lessons.

The creative teacher is constantly looking for ways to improve the lesson. Such searches are aimed at solving the chain of educational – educational tasks, first of all, at increasing the educational role of the lesson. Modern pedagogical science faces the problem of how to increase the interest of schoolchildren in biology lessons.

Methods of interesting and non-standard teaching in a biology lesson.

Biology is not an easy science, because before embarking on modeling and control of living systems, a person must master a very large theoretical material and terminological base. It is important to explain to schoolchildren why they need to teach so much, why it is worth doing it.

In such lessons, it is important to provide for a change in the forms of educational work, a variety of methodological techniques, independent work aimed at increasing the activity of students and providing the ability to control their activities by the teacher.

What elements of the lesson will be used by the teacher in a particular lesson depends on the type and type of lesson.

To conduct a modern lesson you need:

1. Clearly define and formulate the topic of the lesson; determine the place of the topic in the training course; determine the leading concepts on which this lesson is based; designate for yourself that part of the training material that will be used in the future.

2. Determine and clearly articulate for yourself and separately for the students the goal of the lesson. In this regard, designate the teaching, developing and educating functions of the lesson.

3. Plan training material.

I always motivate my students by the fact that the future belongs to people who know how to learn. If you know how to independently acquire new knowledge and understand in what situations to apply it, then you will never be left without interesting work, you will become successful, not confused and disoriented.

The criteria for the effectiveness of the lesson with the system-activity approach are:

  • whether the teacher has a curriculum for the lesson, depending on the readiness of the class;
  • use of problematic creative tasks;
  • application of knowledge that allows the student to choose the type, type and form of material;
  • creating a positive-emotional mood for the work of all students during the lesson;
  • discussion with the children at the end of the lesson not only what “we learned” but also what they liked  and why, what they would like to do again, but to do it differently;
  • encouraging students to choose and independently use different ways of completing assignments;
  • the mark given to the student at the end of the lesson must be reasoned according to a number of parameters: correctness, independence, originality;
  • when assigning homework, not only the topic and scope of the assignment is called, but it is explained in detail how to rationally organize your study work when doing homework.

Educational games in biology

Games – exercises can also take place when students are doing homework. For example, crosswords. The class is divided into groups of 4-5 people each. Each student in the group is assigned a personal number, i.e. card option. The group works on the assignment for 5 minutes, then transfers to another table, where they proceed to the next assignment and go through all the milestones.

A crossword puzzle is a game of guessing the words with which you need to fill a shape from squares.  The number of tasks in educational crosswords is usually small – the answer is based on three to five words.

Most often we use crosswords to develop terminology. If desired, students can compose a crossword puzzle on a given topic at home. In this case, we work out the accuracy of the definition of concepts. In the next lesson, we solve them in groups or individually. You can also invite the children to complete the puzzle or crossword puzzle they started in the lesson.

For example, in biology in the 6th grade, after studying the topic “Insect orders with complete transformation“, we set a crossword puzzle with a task: enter the names of various insects in the crossword columns. Insects that develop with complete transformation include the following orders: Coleoptera (or beetles), Lepidoptera (or butterflies), Hymenoptera, and Diptera. In their development, they go through four stages: an egg, a larva, a pupa, and an adult insect.

Preparing for the event: High school students receive assignments two weeks before the event, determine the research area of ​​the goal and objectives of the project. Non-standard lessons are a rather complex system. And in order to effectively, successfully, professionally use them in practice, you need to know the theoretical aspects of a modern non-standard lesson, as well as learn the features of their use in secondary school, which should be adhered to in order to implement a certain pedagogical plan.

Most of the children are fond of such work, it does not tire them, and at the same time it motivates them, gives them the opportunity to show initiative, ingenuity, creativity.
Biology requires a lot of vocabulary work from students. The need to memorize a large number of terms, their meaning often causes difficulties for schoolchildren. In this regard, we use puzzles.

Games – we build travel in different ways, including on a fabulous basis. Such a game allows you to work out not only the ability to know the card, but also to read it. The ability to represent the real world through a combination of drawings and signs of the map develops.

Role-playing game in biology lesson

In such games, children reflect various aspects of life, the peculiarities of the relationship between adults, and refine their knowledge of the surrounding reality. A distinctive feature of a role-playing game is the presence of roles, plot, game actions.

Here are a number of guidelines for the development and use of didactic games.

  1. Certain methodological knowledge and skills will help to correctly conduct a didactic game. This knowledge helps to apply the best version of the didactic game at one stage or another of the lesson.  This will allow children to pre-set up for the game and prepare for it creatively.
  2. Attributes should be beautiful, bright, mysterious, extraordinary. Visualization should be simple and capacious, aesthetically correct.  The clarity used in the didactic game should be more schematic in nature than pictorial.
  3. A group of observers should not be ignored; it is necessary to give them an important role of arbiter.  This ensures the interest of children, the desire to listen, participate in the game, and be an active participant.
  4. The teacher, as the leader of the game, constantly activates the work of passive students. Sometimes it is useful to introduce incentive and penalty points into the rules of the game.
  5. The teacher should not allow a decrease in children’s interest in the game, subjectivity in dishonesty. It is necessary to skillfully regulate the course of the game.
  6. During the game, discipline and order are required. During the game, try to provide a normal psychological and pedagogical climate. There should be an atmosphere of respect, mutual understanding, trust, empathy between the teacher and the children. It is better to keep the tone friendly, loyal.

Non-standard lessons, not only can be in the form of a variety of sports games, but can also be role-playing and plot, because a game is a struggle for something or a presentation of something, that is, who will represent something better than others. Role-playing games act not only on external feelings, but also on memory, thinking, and cause more complex experiences.
