Respiratory Diagnostic and Monitoring Device Market
respiratory diagnostic and monitoring device market :- Living without oxygen is not possible, but apart from merely having it all around, it is also important to have a good pair of lungs, to be able to take in the gas and convert it to energy. Since life isn’t fair and not everything is good, there are a horde of respiratory diseases which hamper with the functioning of the lungs. Among the most common are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, with the World Health Organization (WHO) putting their annual incidence at 251 million and 235 million cases, respectively.

- Canavan disease is a neurological disorder in which the brain degenerates into spongy tissue full of small fluid-filled spaces. It is caused by a mutation in the ASPA gene which makes an enzyme called aspartoacylase. This enzyme is primarily present in oligodendrocytes, contributes to the manufacture of myelin, and is responsible for breaking down (metabolizing) the brain chemical N-acetyl-L-aspartate or N-acetyl-L-aspartic acid. In Canavan disease, many oligodendrocytes do not mature and instead die, leaving nerve cell projections known as axons vulnerable and unable to properly function.
Canavan disease causes progressive brain atrophy. There is no cure, nor is there a standard course of treatment. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. The prognosis for Canavan disease is poor.
The various devices used for ascertaining how well the lungs are functioning include the pulse oximeter, spirometer, gas analyzer, and capnograph. Among these, the spirometer measures how much air is entering and exiting the lungs, which helps doctors determine if the volume of the lungs has been compromised. The pulse oximeter analyzes the oxygen saturation (SpO2), which is the percentage of oxygenated hemoglobin relative to the total hemoglobin (oxygenated and deoxygenated) in the blood. As long as the O2 stats are above 90% (though the desirable range is 95–100%), there is no need to worry.
Similarly, the gas analyzer measures the partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide in blood, which has been drawn from the femoral or radial artery. This test determines how well the blood in the capillaries is being oxygenated in the lungs’ alveoli (even though the blood never actually enters the alveoli, the gaseous exchange instead happening in the alveoli–capillary membrane, also called the blood–air barrier). The capnograph is specifically used to analyze the partial pressure of CO2 in respiratory gases, primarily in patients under anesthesia.
Rising incidence of breathing disorders and diseases
Apart from the rising incidence of breathing disorders and diseases, another reason for the increasing demand for respiratory diagnostic and monitoring devices is the booming geriatric population. As per the United Nations’ World Population Ageing 2019 report, the population of people aged 65 years or more would increase from 703 million in 2019 to 1.5 billion in 2050. Such people’s biophysical functions are compromised, as age makes them weaker. Therefore, they have a greater chance of having impaired breathing, which is why they end up in a hospital more often than younger people.
On a geographical basis, the largest respiratory diagnostic and monitoring device market is currently North America, as it has a fast growing geriatric population. For instance, compared to 49.2 million in 2016, 98 million people would be in the age group of 65 and above, in the U.S., in 2060, as per government sources. Additionally, the country has been the worst struck by COVID-19, registering the highest worldwide death count of 42,518, as of April 21, 2020. Additionally, a range of new and improved devices are being launched in the continent, which would further help increase their uptake.
Therefore, with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and increasing geriatric population, the requirement for instruments to measure people’s lung function will continue rising.
