In the NFL, winning each week is challenging. Only two unbeaten teams remain after five weeks of the season.
The San Francisco 49ers are getting close to going an entire year without dropping a game during the regular season.
Through five games, the 49ers are the NFL’s top team, and it’s not really close. The fact that they hadn’t played anyone before Sunday night may have been used against them. Then they defeated the Dallas Cowboys, a team that was actually a Super Bowl contender. In a 42-10 victory over the Cowboys, the 49ers dominated every facet of the contest behind four touchdown throws from Brock Purdy. The only two 5-0 NFL teams are the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. They are listed on online sportsbooks to win the Super Bowl at 2.5/1 and 7.5/1 odds respectively.
On October 23 of last year, the 49ers suffered their most recent regular-season defeat. A few days after trading for Christian McCaffrey, they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will go an entire calendar year without suffering a regular-season loss if they triumph in their next game against the Cleveland Browns. They play in Week 7 on Monday, October 23.
It will be difficult for anyone to end that record given how the 49ers performed against the Cowboys.
Cowboys are dominated by the 49ers
Purdy has had a significant role in the 49ers’ winning streak. Purdy has started every regular-season game for the 49ers, and they have never lost. Although Purdy has reached 10 consecutive victories, he still has a ways to go before tying Ben Roethlisberger’s record of 15 straight victories to begin a career.
All of this must, of course, be qualified by the term “regular season.” Last year, the Eagles defeated the 49ers in the NFC Championship game, which Purdy left early due to an elbow injury. But if the 49ers keep playing like they have to start this season, they’ll have a chance to make up for that postseason loss. They demonstrated on Sunday night that there is no weakness.
Like they have for the majority of the season, the 49ers got off to a quick start. On their opening drive, Purdy connected with George Kittle for a score. The 49ers ran a reverse later in the opening half, and Purdy caught it and hit an open Kittle downfield for another score. The Detroit Lions used a similar play earlier in the day, and it worked precisely in reverse.
Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the 49ers, admitted after the game that he had seen the Lions use it earlier in the day, but that his own team had been doing it for some time.
The 49ers had a 14-0 advantage over a strong Dallas team after that touchdown. If not for a rare McCaffrey fumble close to the goal line, the score would have been 21-0. Later on, McCaffrey made up for it by setting a team record by scoring a touchdown for the fourteenth game in a row (including playoff games). The final result was 21-7.
The Cowboys continue to rank among the top seven or eight football teams. maximum ten. And when they faced the 49ers, they had no chance. That shows how powerful the Niners are and why they are the heavy favorites to win the Super Bowl.
