To maintain the health of the child, it is important to accustom them to hygiene rituals from an early age. How to do it correctly? And what are the most important health habits for children?
Regular oral hygiene should be part of every child’s daily life. It is worth starting from the moment when the child has the first tooth. By brushing their teeth and gums, children protect themselves from a wide range of health problems, including bad breath and even heart disease. When the child grows up, you need to control the regularity (morning and evening) and duration (at least two minutes) of brushing his teeth.
It is also helpful to encourage children to brush their teeth after every meal to prevent bacterial growth and tooth decay. It is equally important to teach your toddler how to use dental floss and rinse the mouth with a specially designed liquid. Parents should explain to their child why eating a lot of sweets is harmful. For greater effect, it is useful to take the child to the dentist for a consultation so that the child hears the opinion of a professional.
Hygiene of nails
Children should understand from an early age that nail care is an important aspect of human hygiene. The nail plate is a good breeding ground for harmful bacteria that can easily get into your baby’s eyes, nose or mouth. This is fraught with various diseases. Typically, children have their nails cut every week. This controls the cleanliness of the nail plate and the number of microbes underneath. In addition, short nails break less and are more comfortable for the child.
As soon as the baby grows up and is able to cut his nails on his own, it is important to acquaint him with simple rules:
-it is better to cut your nails after taking a bath or shower when they are soft and pliable,
-you need to cut your nails strictly across, avoiding excessively rounded ends, which can cause ingrown nails,
-it is advisable to process rough edges of nails with a file,
-cuticles should not be cut, as they protect the root of the nail plate.
Children may have different attitudes towards bathing, but this procedure is very important for the child’s health and must be taught from an early age. The skin – the largest human organ – plays a critical role in protecting the body from dirt, dust and countless bacteria. This organ needs regular cleansing and hydration. Taking a bath or shower can help flush out dead cells, making room for new ones.
Children are introduced to bathing from birth. Parents should not forget about this and regularly arrange water procedures for the baby. When the child is able to take a shower or bath on his own, you need to teach him how to use a sponge and how to properly clean different parts of the body. It is equally important to teach children to towel dry and put on clean underwear daily.
Learning to use the toilet is, of course, a big step for your child. Most children are ready between ages 2 and 3. Does your child understand what to do? Can he take his clothes off? Does he want to use the toilet? Encourage your child, but do not force him. It may take 3 to 6 months before your child learns to use the toilet during the day. Staying dry all night can take longer. Be patient. Over time, your child will have fewer accidents.
Potty training is not easy. But it is even more responsible to teach your child how to use the toilet room on his own. You need to make sure that they always flush after themselves. If they forgets to do this, you can hang a reminder sign on the door or on the wall of the toilet. Another important habit to teach them is to wash their hands after each visit to the bathroom. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. And of course, you don’t want your child to get sick from not having this habit at all.

Poor hand hygiene is one of the leading causes of stomach and intestinal disorders for both children and adults.
You need to teach a child how to wash their hands thoroughly, and not just moisten them with water and soap. They should know that they need to use soap for at least 20-30 seconds, how to rinse it off and wipe their hands dry. You should also teach your child to use a hand dryer. Handwashing should be practised before and after eating, after using the toilet, after playing outside or with pets, after coughing or sneezing, or after contact with someone who is sick.
Hygiene of the feet
It is just as important as hand care. Regular washing of your feet will relieve them of unpleasant odours and protect them from various skin infections, including foot fungus. It is advisable for the child to wash their feet at least once a day. It is important to train yourself to dry your feet and toes with a personal towel, leaving no moist environment for bacteria to grow. The child should not be allowed to walk in the same shoes all day, especially without socks. He must have at least two pairs of shoes – outdoor and indoor. It is helpful to cultivate habits of caring for your shoes, cleaning them regularly, and wearing cotton socks.
It is the duty of every parent to explain to the child the role of hygiene habits and the importance of following them. This is now important more than ever, with this pandemic going on. It is better to educate your child from an early age using accessible, playful methods and personal example. Children learn their lessons rather quickly and gradually get used to the necessary hygiene rituals. But it doesn’t hurt to be patient.
